4.6 Treat people as individuals in a particular context

Human beings have equal value, equal rights and are equal before the law, but we are also New Magna Carta Mediumdifferent. Fundamentalist egalitarianism has pretended that everyone is the same and, as a result, our systems have become naive and ineffective. Individuals differ by character, values, identities, dreams, priorities, behaviours, beliefs, masculinity, femininity, sexuality, strength, health, fitness, assertiveness, agreeableness, attractiveness, competitiveness, aggressiveness, extroversion, integrity, discipline and much else. To get the best response, we should treat people according to their individual characteristics and context. One group of workers may be best motivated by daily cash bonuses while another may prefer autonomy and access to nature. Different pupils are inspired differently. Everyone must obey the law, but when it comes to punishment and rehabilitation, it should be tailored to the individual for best effect. The kind of policing appropriate to people who are impulsive, shame-oriented, acquisitive and macho is completely different to the kind of policing that will work with sensitive, guilty, image-conscious, postmodern professionals. We would like everyone to be trustworthy but that is not realistic.
