Science is excellent at creating and testing theories with phenomena which are observable and measurable. We are not so good at measuring love, care, security, relationships, wisdom, intuition, judgement, instinct, creativity, compassion, trust, respect, honesty, integrity, gratitude, forgiveness, power and behaviour. Science is good at technical medicine. It has been ineffective, so far, at measuring compassion, the therapist effect and healing. It has been excellent at measuring the placebo effect but we don’t use it much. The most important things aren’t on a balance sheet. Businesses find it easy to measure financial outcomes but have been less effective at measuring morale, creativity, trust, leadership and trust. We are good at measuring the number of crimes in the community but find it harder to measure goodwill, relationships, ethos and community spirit. If we put our minds to it, we can get much better at measuring the things which we value.
