The best way to achieve cooperation between parties who might otherwise be competitors or enemies is to identify shared goals which align their interests such that they collaborate. It is in the interests of all human beings that we survive as a human race, that we have a clean planet with abundant resources that can be accessed by everyone, that we thrive economically and have a high standard of living and that we live in peace and security with all other parts of the world. These aspirations can feel rather naive or idealistic in the heat of a conflict. By looking at all the potential flashpoints and conflicts, we can get ahead of ourselves and identify the shared goals which can bring us together and avoid conflict.
