At medical school, doctors are taught that if they really listen, the patient will tell them the diagnosis within five minutes. The average doctor interrupts the patient within 20 seconds. One thing that charismatic leaders have in common is that, when they meet someone, they bring their presence and attention fully to that person so that they feel heard, seen and acknowledged. They feel like the most important person in the world for a moment. We need to remind ourselves to practise genuinely listening, not just waiting for the other person to finish speaking. That means sincerely listening with your whole mind, body and spirit, to give that person our full attention. And as we listen, we need to see the amazing being within – the very best of them. They will reward that by growing and performing at their best.
