We are quick to make assumptions about others based on prejudices or expectations, or perhaps projecting our own thoughts and feelings onto the other person. If we take the trouble to de-centre from ourselves, walk in their shoes, immerse in their situation and see the world through their eyes, there is a wealth of information available to us. When we empathise, we relate better to that person, establish rapport more effectively and connect to them more deeply. They feel seen, heard, understood and trust our sincerity and authenticity. With that extra information, we are in a better position to react accordingly, make wise decisions, predict behaviour and assess risks. Time spent establishing empathy pays a dividend in terms of time saved through better decision-making and less resistance, conflict and misunderstanding.
