23.10 The welfare system must be fair, discriminating and compassionate

We need to make judgements about what we can and can’t afford, about who does and doesn’t New Magna Carta Mediumreceive support, and about the nature of that support. We need to wisely discriminate between those who are sincerely unable to work and those who are choosing not to work. Unfortunately, it is inevitable that there is a grey area. There are people who would like to work but are disorganised, lack determination or tenacity, lack the ability to get along with other people, easily get into arguments, don’t cope well with frustration, suffer from social anxiety, have rigid personalities, don’t handle money well, have poor concentration and poor boundaries. They can be difficult to manage and unproductive. There are some people who simply want to play the system and freeload. Some are deeply entrenched in a victim consciousness and expect others to look after them. There is no easy fix to this. Our welfare system has to be managed by human beings with skill, authority, judgement and compassion.
