We should discriminate good from bad, effective from ineffective, value for money from not, right and wrong, true and false. Some forms of discrimination are both unfair and harmful. Why should attractive people be promoted more, be paid more, be more popular and less likely to go to prison? Why should shy people be discriminated against, except in relation to jobs that require an extrovert? We routinely discriminate against people who are unattractive, shy, overweight, lacking in self-confidence, lacking in self-esteem, old, bisexual, kinky, asexual, reserved, maverick, a whistleblower or possess one of hundreds of other characteristics. If we are sincere about wanting to avoid unfair discrimination, as opposed to playing victim games for political purposes, we need to take all forms of discrimination seriously.
