By definition, not everyone can be successful. 50% of people are below average by any measure. However hard we try, life isn’t always fair. There are those who get a bad start in life through no fault of their own. There are those who struggle due to events beyond their control, abuse from others and sometimes as a direct result of their own behaviour and choices. Unless we want a cruel dog eat dog world, we need to empower, enable and support those who need it, providing a safety net to catch those who fall down and help to get them back on their feet. This isn’t an act of naive kindness; it is a matter of self-interest. Any of us may suffer from misfortune, harm from others, events beyond our control. All of us make mistakes. Businesses fail. The best intentions go awry. As a group, we benefit if people are able to take risks, be entrepreneurial, make sacrifices and commit to a higher purpose in the knowledge that, if they fall on hard times, the community will support them.
