On subjects like race, immigration, justice, fairness, crime and punishment, our personal and historical wounds easily get triggered. We care about these subjects not only because they are important, but because, often, we are motivated by a sense of injustice, violation, anger and frustration. This makes it all the more important that we make an effort to defuse those emotional triggers and heal the wounds in order to progress. It is not about being nice, it is about a practical desire to get over obstacles and be happier, healthier and more secure.
