We have taken relativism and non-judgement to a fundamentalist extreme. We say that all ideas, all cultures and all values are equal. We say that it is unethical to make any judgements about anything or anyone, particularly if they are in a protected victim category. If you never make a judgement then you can’t distinguish good from bad, right from wrong, better from worse, desirable from undesirable, pleasant from unpleasant, moral from immoral, justified from unjustified, true or false, effective or ineffective, guilty or innocent. In short you cannot function effectively. We must make healthy judgements, comparisons and discriminate wisely. It is a fundamental part of being a human being and we need to use a judgement wisely, integrating the very best of postmodern sensitivity, complexity and nuance. Therefore we must make fundamentalist relativism and non-judgement taboo.
