How do we maximise participation, accountability and good decision-making in democracy?
How do we refresh and deepen our democracy?
How do we protect minorities from abuse by the majority?
How do we preserve and improve our open, free, pluralistic society while others seek to assert dominance over us?
How do we prevent groups and individuals manipulating democracy?
How do we support the evolution of mature, transpartisan politics?
Where is democracy appropriate and where is it not?
We keep saying that we value diversity, inclusiveness and multiple voices, but we are much less keen on actually doing it. If we want a vibrant democracy and a creative culture in which ingenuity and imagination transform our lives for the better – a society in which we really get to the bottom of problems and sort them out – then we need to mean it. Let’s sincerely promote free thinking and diversity of thought and include all of those voices that we find irritating and offensive. The only limitation should be a minimal set of measures designed to prevent the promotion of hatred and violence, and the undermining of national security, democracy and the rule of law.
