To be secure ourselves, we need to help everyone else become secure. Imagine if the trillions of dollars that we spent on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan had been spent on providing clean water, health, infrastructure and education to the poorest people in the world. Imagine the impact not only on them but on our reputation, how we would feel about ourselves, how the other peoples of the world would trust and respect us. This is not an either/or choice. We don’t have to choose between being militarily strong and being good. One without the other is ineffective. Doing both is powerful.
