To make the next leap in our collective cultural evolution, we need to upgrade political correctness by identifying new forms of bigot – a diversity of bigots, in fact. We need to remove some of our limiting beliefs and negative thinking in order to reach our full potential. In the 18th and 19th centuries, scientific and rational thinking became dominant and the old mystical, tribal and religious belief systems came under attack, were suppressed and made taboo. In the 20th Century, the postmodern way of thinking challenged racism, sexism, male chauvinism, social hierarchy, religious faith, traditional marriage, family and homophobia. The aim was to usher in the new age of equality, fairness, diversity, multiculturalism and social justice. The traditional forms of bigotry were made taboo and heavily suppressed by peer pressure, violence and new laws restricting speech and thought. This postmodern value system has overstepped the mark and become authoritarian and fundamentalist. We do need to distinguish healthy and unhealthy identity, healthy masculinity and male chauvinism, healthy authority and exploitative power and so on.
